A minute on the internet in 2023

Every year, the folks at Domo create a graphic that showcases how much is created and consumed across the internet in any given minute. You can view the 2023 data on there site here, or scroll down to view it:

The numbers are always staggering to see. In just one minute, people send 241M emails, watch 43 years of streaming content, and stream nearly 70K Taylor Swift songs.

I thought it would be interesting to compare this chart to the first one that they made back in 2013. It’s interesting to see how the numbers have changed, but it’s also interesting that so many of the ones from the 2013 list don’t even show up in 2023.

Some things I noticed:

  • YouTube users uploaded 48 hours of new video per minute in 2013. This isn’t on the Domo 2023 list, but it’s estimated that we now see around 500 hours of new video every minute.
  • Apple app downloads were at 47,000 per minute in 2013. That metric isn’t on their new dashboard, but seems to be just over 400,000 per minute in 20213.
  • Emails sent went from 204M to 241M. Not a huge jump, but still climbing.
  • Google searches went from 2M to 6.3M.
  • In 2013 they shared that there were 347 new WordPress posts per minute, but that data isn’t in their 2023 list. However, that has grown…
