A new TRMNL

After repeated (unpaid) promotions from the guys on the Tech Talk Y’all podcast, I finally went ahead and bought a TRMNL device. It’s pretty great! If you’ve not heard of them before, this video is the one that finally convinced me to give it a try:

In short, it’s a 7.5″ e-ink screen, similar in size and feel to a Kindle. It sits on your desk (or hangs on your wall) and updates periodically with helpful information. They have dozens of apps available for it, so you can customize exactly what it shows and how often it updates (typical is every 10–15 minutes).

Because it’s e-ink and doesn’t update often, the battery will last for months. This means it can be on your desk or wall without any kind of cable, and you just need to recharge it a few times per year.

I’m still playing with the settings on mine, but right now I have it pulling:

• Google Calendar events
• Weather
• Highlights from Readwise
• Quotes from the Office

I’ve also played with apps like New York Times headlines, but the font there was too small for my liking. Many of the apps don’t quite show up the way I want (and customization options are limited), but they’re improving daily.
