What is a “personal invitation”?

A few weeks ago, a buddy of mine sent me a text inviting me to a trivia night with him. That was a personal invitation.

Before that, a friend reached out inviting me to play a round of golf with him. That was a personal invitation.

More and more, though, I’m getting emails that are clearly bulk that are trying to be a “personal invitation”. Here are a few, just from this month:

None of those were, in any way, a “personal invitation”. Not even close. To me, it feels like a growing evolution of very bad marketing automation. Some marketing automation can be a good thing, but a true personal connection will always win.

This why I’m finding tools like Nat and Dex to be so great, because their entire goal is to help facilitate one-on-one connections.

If you have a personal invitation for me, I’d love to hear about it. If you have a “personal invitation” to your entire email list, you might want to rethink it a bit.
